TriStar Universe Divergence Notice

This article documents the TriStar Interstellar campaign universe. Events through 3029 broadly follow the canonical timeline; the point of divergence is the Tortuga Campaign of 3029–3030. In the canonical timeline, Trevaline ruled the Tortuga Dominions until 3042 and survived until 3075. In this universe, she did not.

Paula Trevaline, known across the Davion Outback as Lady Death, was the Pirate Queen of the Tortuga Dominions from 3015 until her capture by the Tennessee Star Guards in 3030. Her execution on Memphis that year — the culmination of TriStar Interstellar's Tortuga Campaign — marked the end of organized pirate rule in the Dominions and the beginning of TriStar's doctrine of armed self-reliance on the rimward trade routes.

Early Life and Rise to Power

Trevaline was born on Tortuga Prime in 2991 to a pirate gunnery master and a pharmacist who had been brought to Tortuga against her wishes. Her childhood was shaped by brutality: at nine she witnessed the murder of her mother by the MechWarrior Jack "Blackjack" McGee, and by eleven she had killed for the first time. As a teenager she ran a pub in the Outback settlement on Tortuga Prime, building a reputation as someone not to be crossed.

In September 3008, McGee wandered into her pub without recognizing the daughter of the woman he had murdered. Trevaline poisoned him, extracted the activation codes for his Banshee, and shot him dead. She renamed the 'Mech Lady Death, took the name for herself, and entered the pirate trade.

Her ascent was swift. By 3015 she sat on Tortuga City's ruling pirate council, and that same year she deposed the reigning pirate lord in single combat, declaring herself supreme ruler of the Dominions. She consolidated the fractious pirate bands under her sole command, executed dissenters publicly, and imposed order of a kind: independent bands could operate from Tortuga space so long as they tithed to her, never crossed her, and left her subjects alone.

The TriStar Protection Arrangement (3018–3029)

It was precisely this consolidation that made Trevaline dangerous to TriStar Interstellar. Before 3015, pirate raids on the rimward routes were chaotic but survivable — uncoordinated bands picking at stragglers. Under Lady Death, the Dominions could mass force against scheduled shipping, and TriStar's routes through the Anjin Muerto Operational Area passed within easy reach of Tortuga space.

After losing three JumpShips and eleven DropShips to coordinated Dominion raids between 3016 and 3018, CEO Marlene Starr made the decision that would quietly shame the company for a decade: TriStar paid. Beginning in 3018, the company transferred an annual "transit assurance fee" to Tortuga Prime through a chain of Outback intermediaries. Internal accounting — later made infamous — recorded every payment to the C-bill. Over eleven years, the total came to 25,920,000 C-bills.

The arrangement held. TriStar shipping moved unmolested through the rimward routes even as the Dominions savaged other carriers, and the company's dominance of Periphery March freight owes something, uncomfortably, to Lady Death's protection. The payments were known only to a handful of executives — and, after the assassinations of Belasarius and Marlene Starr, to their successors, who continued paying while the Fourth Succession War made any alternative impossible.

The Tortuga Campaign (3029–3030)

The Fourth Succession War changed the calculus. The Tennessee Star Guards rotated home in late 3029 as a blooded, veteran combined-arms force — three regiments hardened by two years of front-line service, with a full artillery train and confidence to match. The war's end also brought something rarer: political cover. With Hanse Davion's attention consolidating his gains, the Periphery March was left to solve its own rimward problem.

The TSG's campaign order, issued under the operational name FINAL INVOICE, has become part of company legend. The 1st Memphis Militia, 3rd Lackland Regulars, and 7th Sherwood Rangers, lifted by the military DropShip fleet, struck the outer Dominion worlds in early 3030 and fought their way inward toward Tortuga Prime.

It was not the rout TriStar's directors had promised their shareholders. Trevaline's consolidated command structure — the very thing that had made her worth paying — made the Dominions a genuine military opponent. Her pirates fought from prepared positions, traded worlds for time, and bled the Guards at every jump point. The 3rd Lackland Regulars lost a third of their 'Mech strength at the Battle of Wrecker's Yard alone. Contemporary TSG after-action reports describe the campaign as "bitter beyond any expectation formed in the Succession War."

The campaign's bloodiest fighting came at New Port Royal, the fortress world guarding the approach from the March; its fall opened the road to Tortuga Prime itself. Rather than assault Trevaline's fortified positions around Tortuga City directly, the TSG artillery train invested the capital's defensive ring and commenced a continuous bombardment that TriStar's quartermasters had prepared with deliberate, vindictive precision: 25,920,000 artillery shells — one for every C-bill the company had paid in protection money — delivered around the clock for ninety days. The "Ledger Barrage," as it came to be known, pulverized the fixed defenses, broke the garrison's will, and passed into Outback folklore as the most expensive receipt ever issued.

Trevaline was captured attempting to reach the spaceport when the final assault went in. Her personal guard fought to the last; she herself was taken alive, reportedly still armed with her infamous poisoned nails.

Trial and Execution

Trevaline was transported to Memphis and tried before a Periphery March tribunal on charges of piracy, murder, and crimes against the peace of the realm. The trial lasted eleven days; the verdict was never in doubt. On 14 August 3030, Paula Trevaline was executed by firing squad at the Memphis Mining Academy parade ground. She was thirty-nine.

Her last recorded words, addressed to the assembled TriStar directors, were: "You paid me for years. You'll pay someone. You always will." TriStar's official history dedicates a full page to refuting the claim.

Legacy

The campaign broke organized pirate rule in the Tortuga Dominions for a generation. Without Trevaline's unified command, the surviving bands returned to the fractious, small-scale raiding of the pre-3015 era — a threat TriStar's newly armed doctrine was built to handle. The Enterprise-class JumpShip program, with its 14-PPC armament, was approved by the board within two years of the campaign's end, and the company adopted a formal policy that no protection payment would ever again be made under any circumstances.

The campaign also transformed the Tennessee Star Guards from a respected mercenary-grade formation into the premier military power of the rimward Periphery March, and bound the Guards and the company together in the public imagination of the three capital worlds.

Differences from the Canonical Timeline

Downstream implications for the 3040s–3070s (pirate activity in the Pirates Haven cluster, the fate of "Bloody" James Kaiten, Calderon Protectorate security) remain open for future divergence documentation.
